Excessive Sweating

Skin
Excessive Sweating is known medically as Hyperhidrosis. It is in fact a problem affecting a lot of people over the world. Not only it creates embrassing situation, it also affects the health. As you may know, it is when the naturally ocurring bacteria on our skin are allowed to fester in a moist and warm condition that our bodies produce body odor. The sweatier you are, the more likely you will be malodorous and more active the bacteria will be.

Feet, hands, underarm and face can get sweaty too. The nervous system sends strong messages to some people's skin when they are nervous or excited, which can produce a lot of moisture (sweat).

Causes of Excessive Sweating

If you are suffering from excessive sweating and sweat even excessively under stressful circumstances, please note that you are not alone. Problems of excessive sweating appear in 1% of the world population and 7% of the American. There are many types of hyperhidrosis which result in excessive sweaty hands, feet, underarm, and even on face.

Two major causes of excessive sweating had been identified so far. It is important to understand more about them for finding their cures.

The first major cause of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is called Primary or Essential Hyperhidrosis and is the cause to most people. Primary hyperhidrosis appears in one or more areas of the body such as the palms of the hands, feet, armpits or forehead. This cause of hyperhidrosis usually begins from early childhood or teenage years and will continue to exist for the rest of life. Some believe that the condition can be hereditary although it is arguable. The excessive sweating is usually triggered by stress, anxiety or nervousness. The sweat glands become overactive even the body is at rest. That's why many people tend to sweat excessively even they are not under pressure or exercising.

The second major cause of hyperhidrosis is called Secondary Hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately, it is not fully understood by the experts still. Secondary hyperhidrosis can be caused by hormonal disorders or problems. Some of the underlying causes of secondary hyperhidrosis are endocrine therapy, hyperthyroidism, acute psychiatric disorders, obesity, corpulance, and in woman menopause and its related symptoms. For such case the underlying conditions of secondary hyperhidrosis need to be treated first. For instance, if a woman is receiving hormonal therapy due to prostate cancer, it is likely that she is experiencing a major abundance in perspiration. However, such symptoms can be relieved by anti-estrogen treatments.

The causes of hyperhidrosis may vary from person to person although usually they fall under the categories as discussed above.

Symptoms of Excessive Sweating

Excessive Sweating can occur suddenly or continuously, in the four major areas: hands (palmer hyperhidrosis), armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis), feet (plantar hyperhidrosis), and face (facial hyperhidrosis).

excessive underarm sweating
Axillary Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the armpits) can cause embarrassing wet marks on shirts. People with this condition avoid many colors and fabrics which could show the sweat marks.

Palmer hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the hands) can affect socialization and works. Moist hands cause sufferers to avoid social contacts, such as shaking hands. Teens may be embarrassed to date or participate in social activities. Writing a letter can be an impossible task because so much sweat pours from the hand to the paper. Employees may have trouble gripping equipment.

The combination of palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis can create a problem for a driver because the moisture of the hands and feet can build up to make the steering wheel and foot pedals slippery; this, in turn, can cause a lack of control of the vehicle.

Along with facial sweating, someone could experience facial blushing, another embarrassing manifestation of the activity of the sympathetic nervous system.
